Introduction to 13 Plus Tuition

The 13 Plus examination is taken in Year 8 for entry into independent Senior Schools at Year 9 for transition before GCSE options are chosen and preparation starts. The test varies from school to school, some schools use the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB) examination format, but others use unique exams.

Here at Think Tutors, we are experienced in the requirements for each school, providing school-specific 13 Plus tuition so your child will master the subject matter expected of them in the test to avoid any surprises. We also provide advice on which schools will best suit your child's abilities and interests.

Similarly to the 11 Plus exam, the key to success with the 13 Plus is early preparation. Starting tutoring early gives your child the time to build confidence in examination material and structure. We recommend starting up to 12 months before the exam to give your child ample time to prepare for the 13 Plus to the best of their ability.

What is 13 Plus Tuition

In the 13 Plus examinations there is more variety than the 11 Plus, as some schools choose to use unique exams rather than the ISEB examinations.

As a minimum the 13 Plus assessment will include English, Maths and Science components. Some schools require assessment of a wider range of subjects to gain a broader understanding of your child's current academic level; tests can involve Geography, History, Religious Studies, Classics or Modern Languages at differing levels in addition to the core subjects.

13 Plus Tuition

At Think Tutors, we use highly experienced tutors who are experts in their field, with a passion for tutoring and making the learning experience come alive for their pupils.

We find that schools typically teach children on the subject matter but are not given exposure to the exam question style that they will face in the 13 Plus examinations. Our expert 13 Plus tutors work with your child to identify any learning gaps whilst exposing your child to the 13 Plus exam through using example questions and mock tests. This exposure increases familiarity and confidence so that by the time your child completes the exam it will feel similar to a tuition session.

Our 13 Plus tutors can operate either online, face-to-face or a hybrid of both working around your child's timetabled school day and your family commitments. Tutoring with us is simple, convenient and hassle free.

We can work with your child over a long period of time, building a well established relationship between your child and our tutor. Here at Think Tutors we recommend starting tuition a year prior to the 13 Plus examinations, starting with two hours per week to give your child appropriate time to prepare for the exam and build confidence in their ability. Shorter term tutoring is also available for a more intensive approach prior to the examination.
